Crabs on a Train!

In a truly heartwarming, albeit weird story, a group of teenagers have rescued a crab from certain death and released it into the Thames Estuary.

The crab, a member of the Cancer pagurus species, was purchased by the group from a fishmonger in Barking who presumably felt pity for the creature, which was reportedly crammed into a small space in the shop.

Demonstrating a basic knowledge of crab biology, the teenagers repeatedly wetted the crab to ensure that its gills did not dry out and it could breathe. Resourcefully, they did this in the train's toilet.

The train journey from Barking to Southend is only around 40 mins so while the crab will have been uncomfortable and maybe sustained some damage on account of the different salt value in tap water, the crab, along with the teenagers made it to their destination alive.

We do not recommend dousing your rescued crabs in train sink water, rather, if you are set on saving crabs from fishmongers, make sure to know whether the species is a fresh or saltwater crab in advance and maybe bring a bucket.

Thankfully, the crab had not had the tendons on its claws cut, which would render the crab defenceless in the wild.

So let's hope the crab takes advantage of this second chance at life and thrives in its new home in the Thames Estuary.
